A Fun Day at the Zoo For a Great Cause! Saturday, August 27th, at 9am

By Erica Roth August 22, 2016
Each year for the past 3 years, my family and friends have gathered together for a one mile walk to support my son Henry, who has Down syndrome.  When he was born almost 3.5 years ago, because we didn't know any better,  my family was filled with fear and sadness.  When we were ready, an amazing organization in Northeast Ohio, The Up Side of Downs, helped us to realize that our son's birth was not something to be afraid of or to be sad about, but that his life was as deserving of celebration as that of any other baby!  With their help, and by getting to know our new son, we know now that Henry is perfect just the way he is-smart, funny, and adorable-and that we wouldn't change him for the world.

The Up Side of Downs provides new parents of children with Down syndrome the support and companionship they need to know that they are not alone.  It is an amazing network of parents and professionals that come together in support of one another.  They provide "new parent packets" to new parents of children with Down syndrome-and it's not just a pile of paperwork and information-Henry received an adorable outfit, toys, books, and more.  We truly felt like part of a new family!  USOD also provides resources for education, health care, sports, and recreation for individuals with DS.

Each summer, one of the main fundraising efforts by the Up Side of Downs is the Buddy Walk.  Thousands of people gather to walk to celebrate the lives of people with Down Syndrome and to support the Up Side of Downs.  This year, the walk is taking place at the Cleveland Zoo.  Please consider joining us!  You will be amazed at the energy, excitement, and FUN that make this event come alive!  The Buddy Walk is not just a walk-there are tons of free kids activities provided by the Up Side of Downs, and your registration includes admission to the zoo for the day.  You can register at the zoo the day of the walk, Saturday, August 27th.  Registration opens at 8am and the walk steps off at 9.  If you can't make it, you can donate to this great cause here.
