Summer Reading Programs in Medina County 2021

May 27, 2021

We’ve all heard of it...the “summer slide,” or the tendency for children to lose some of the academic gains they’ve made during the previous year over the summer.  One way we can combat this slide is by encouraging our kids to read each day while they are on break.  Just 30 minutes out of each of those long summer days is enough to mean starting off the next school year in a much better position.  Now, I am all for a relaxing and fun summer for my kids, but 30 minutes a day is completely doable.  If your kids are like mine, though, they need a little incentive to get those minutes in.  Here are some ideas to get your kids to read, read, read!

National Programs

Barnes & Noble Summer Reading Program

Participation is a fun and easy way for kids to earn free books. They simply read a designated number of books – library books, books borrowed from friends or books bought at Barnes & Noble – write about their favorite part in our Reading Journal, and bring a completed Reading Journal to a Barnes & Noble bookstore. Children then choose their free book from the books listed on the Reading Journal and collect their free book from a store near them during July and August.

Sync Free Summer Audio Book Program for Teens

Teens may download free audio books all summer long!

Pizza Hut's Book It Program

Parents, join us for Camp BOOK IT! and keep rewarding your kids all summer long. Track and reward your kids' reading for June, July and August in our digital dashboard. When they meet their monthly reading goal, they'll receive a free one-topping Personal Pan Pizza® from Pizza Hut! We'll also share fun activities and book recommendations each week to keep the fun going throughout the summer! Enroll today!

Finally, here are some tips to get your kids reading this summer!

  • No electronics until reading is done.

Somehow we can get our reading out of the way very early in the day if there is no Minecraft until it’s finished!

  • Read with them.

If mom is doing it too, it makes it a little easier.

  • Have them read to each other.

Everything is more fun when we do it together!  Have your kids take turns reading out loud and everyone gets to enjoy the stories!

  • Create a cozy space.

Kids crave routine, and if they have a comfy place just for reading it can become a customary part of the day.

  • Bribe them!

Of course we aren’t supposed to bribe our kids...but reading is important enough to bend the rules a little.
